Raku-Fired Hands Inspired by Rodin

Spring 2020 3D Design final

Spring 2020 3D Design final

Rodin is known for his virtuoso abilities and directing his focus on capturing expressions of the human condition through the figure. In a similar spirit, Spring 2020 3D Design students paired up to choose a posture for their hand to photograph from all sides to use as a model.

Rodin inspiration

Instead of making replicas of Rodin sculptures, we focused on the formal qualities exhibited in this series and how the artist focused on the expressive nature of the subject’s posture, combined with the expressive nature of modeling a form out of clay.

Students focused on the elements of line, shape, color, texture and space in the creation of their hands. Final products were evaluated according to principles of balance, dominance, proportion, scale and contrast.

The resulting sculptures were fired using the Raku method, which removes pieces from the kiln while they are still glowing red hot and places them with combustible materials, yielding an unpredictable visual result.

Illusions of Depth Fall 2017

The Fall 2017 ART113 Color class has once again created illusions of depth on the sidewalks of the PVCC campus. Using strategies of color and composition such as overlapping, diminishing scale, color atmosphere, vertical placement and receding color, the students have created a series of surprising troupe l’oeil images that interrupt viewers’ perception of depth as the encounter the normally mundane concrete sidewalk.

Students in this year’s project are: Phil Anderson, Zoe Cano, Amber Dairymple, Kylie Eckert, Alexandra Kirk, Michael O’Harra, Chase Ortega

The group works from 5:30 to about 8:00 pm to create their image from a previously designed mock-up created in class.

Summer 2017 Flute Choir Concert at PVCC

The Paradise Valley Community College Summer Flute Choir presents its 24th annual concert this summer! The program started in 1994, and the choir is composed of folks from all walks of life: students to doctors, retirees to parents of young families, founding members to those who just started playing with the group this year.

An exciting addition this summer: Catherine McMichael, the composer of one of the pieces the group is playing will be coming in to work with the group on the piece, and share insights into the work's composition.

This work, as well as several others, will be performed on Thursday evening, July 27, at 7:30 pm in the Center for the Performing Arts. Admission to the concert is free of charge to the public. Come up and say hello to someone - we look forward to meeting you then!

Lee Chivers,
Flute Choir Director

The above photos show the variety of flutes in the choir: Contrabass (the BIG one), to bass and alto, regular flute and piccolo.
