Illusions of Depth Fall 2017

The Fall 2017 ART113 Color class has once again created illusions of depth on the sidewalks of the PVCC campus. Using strategies of color and composition such as overlapping, diminishing scale, color atmosphere, vertical placement and receding color, the students have created a series of surprising troupe l’oeil images that interrupt viewers’ perception of depth as the encounter the normally mundane concrete sidewalk.

Students in this year’s project are: Phil Anderson, Zoe Cano, Amber Dairymple, Kylie Eckert, Alexandra Kirk, Michael O’Harra, Chase Ortega

The group works from 5:30 to about 8:00 pm to create their image from a previously designed mock-up created in class.

Balkan Art Documentary by Professor David Bradley

This summer Professor David Bradley spent a month touring Bosnia and Herzegovina as part of a Fulbright Hays faculty development program. One of 16 high school and community college educators from Arizona, the program was designed to increase awareness of European Muslim culture and art in order to incorporate that understanding in PVCC course curricula.

During his stay Professor Bradley visited galleries, met artists and saw street art in Sarajevo that commented on the war and widespread corruption in the Bosnian government. Intrigued by this theme, he returned to the region in October for another month to interview artists and gather examples of art around social justice themes to present to PVCC students. The footage from this multimedia sabbatical project has now developed into a documentary film. 

When Professor Bradley met artist Edo Vejselovic, they collaborated to transform the footage into a narrative on how artists in the Balkan region are reflecting on their history and the current factors in their daily lives. The goal of the crowdfunding campaign is to distribute the film to festivals in the US and the Balkans and show the world a positive message about what's happening artistically in this rich, historical region.

Spring 2018 Theater Classes at PVCC

Signing up for spring? The Theater Program at PVCC is designed to provide training for students who wish to pursue a degree, further their skills, or find their passion in the Theater business. Within the core requirements for the degree, students will take courses in Acting, Technical Theater, and Theater production with electives offered in many areas such as Stage Combat, Directing, and Theatre for Youth. PVCC is dedicated to providing hands-on experiences for its students and during a typical school year students work in all areas from Acting, Directing, Designing, Stage managing, Building, and crew work on the five plus Theater shows produced in the two theaters on campus.

The "Essay" category is open to any paper written for a non-creative writing class. Research papers are welcome in APA, MLA, or other appropriate, assigned style.

Winning entries will be published in Paradise Review, which will be published in the spring 2018 semester. All entries not published in Paradise Reviewwill be considered for publication in PVCC's online literary journal, Dry Heat, which will also be published in spring 2018.

The Paradise Review is PVCC's annual student literary anthology which showcases excellent creative writing by PVCC students. The perfect bound journal contains poems, short stories, creative nonfiction essays  as well as a "best journalism" piece. Written contents of the Paradise Review are selected during the fall Student Creative Writing Competition by professional judges and published in the spring. In addition to publication, students who enter the contest may be awarded prize monies for each first, second, third and honorable mention category in each category. Judges may select "Writing of Merit" pieces that may be published in the Paradise Review but do not have a cash award value.  The Paradise Review has a press run of between 500-1000 copies and is distributed for free throughout the campus and to the larger community as well as being archived in the PVCC library.

Sunday Jazz Series at Desert Ridge Marketplace

Desert Ridge Marketplace is pleased to present the Sunday Jazz Series with Paradise Valley Community College. Proudly sponsored by the Musical Instrument Museum (www.mim.org), the series explores the rich musical traditions of various jazz composers and genres. Held on September 10th, October 8th and December 10th from 12-2pm on the MainStage at the Mall, the Jazz Series is led by PVCC music faculty Dr. Brett Reed and features PVCC instructors in the ensemble.

Free Ceramics Workshops for Veterans at PVCC

PVCC has received a grant in the amount of $5,100 to create a new program just for Veterans in the community and their family members (over 18) that will provide an opportunity to explore ceramic art techniques and avenues of expression starting September 9, 2017 through May, 2018.

The program will meet in the PVCC Ceramic studio in D building and will be conducted by David L. Bradley, PVCC residential faculty and Frank Krevens, MFA, PVCC adjunct faculty.

The program is a collaboration between PVCC and Arizona Artists Guild. Arizona Artists Guild has hosted an arts program for Veterans since June, 2014 to provide artistic experiences and knowledge to Veterans in our community.

The program is free but space is limited.

1987 is the 30th Anniversary of the founding of Paradise Valley Community College and the PVCC Faculty Rock Band will join in on the celebration by presenting some of the biggest hits from that year. The concert, featuring very special guest vocalists, will include songs by R.E.M., Guns N' Roses, U2, Bon Jovi, INXS, Heart, Crowded House, The Bangles, The Cure and much more!

All proceeds from this concert will benefit the Alice Cooper's Solid Rock to PVCC Pathway Student Scholarship Fund.

Otherness: Work by Dain Q. Gore and Danielle Wood

The Center for the Performing Arts Gallery is pleased to announce Otherness: Work by Dain Q. Gore and Danielle Wood. The artwork will be on view from September 11 - October 13, 2017. The reception is Wednesday, September 27, at 6pm. The reception is open to the public; light refreshments will be served. The CPA Gallery is open and free to the public, Monday through Friday, 9am - 5pm. Parking is available on the NE side of the CPA. 

Dain Q. Gore
Gore is a painter who studies obscure stories of many cultures. He presents cosmic myths mixed with apocryphal and controversial philosophies in a humorous way.

Danielle Wood
Wood conceptualizes the ocean as a surreal metaphor for the subconscious. Her work intertwines forms of biology, but she does not pursue to render specific species, but rather pure abstractions of forms in nature from a variety of habitats spliced or collaged with mixed media, inspired by conscious and subconscious patterns that evolve.

The PVCC Creative Writing Program Presents: The Bridges Series

The Bridges Series is a collaborative reading/speaking series sponsored by PVCC’s Creative Writing Program. The goal of The Bridges Series is to bring innovative and creative entrepreneurs as well as accomplished writers of fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and other genres to campus. The series has featured award-winning poets and fiction writers, video game developers, advertising professionals, a ghost writer, and many others. One focus of the series is to feature local artists and artists and professionals from outside our city and state. The Fall 2017 Bridges Series features writers Patricia Murphy, Hedy Habra and Beth Cato.

Patricia Colleen Murphy founded Superstition Review at Arizona State University, where she teaches creative writing and magazine production. Her book Hemming Flames (Utah State University Press, 2016) won the May Swenson Poetry Award judged by Stephen Dunn, and in 2017 won the Milt Kessler Poetry Award. A chapter from her memoir in progress was published as a chapbook by New Orleans Review. Her writing has appeared in many literary journals, including The Iowa Review, Quarterly West, American Poetry Review, Smartish Pace, Burnside Review, Poetry Northwest, Third Coast, Hobart, decomP, Midway Journal, Armchair/Shotgun, and Natural Bridge. She lives in Phoenix, AZ.

Thursday, October 19th: Hedy Habra

Hedy Habra has authored two poetry collections, Under Brushstrokes, finalist for the USA Best Book Award and the International Poetry Book Award, and Tea in Heliopolis, winner of the USA Best Book Award and finalist for the International Poetry Book Award. Her story collection, Flying Carpets, won the Arab American National Book Award's Honorable Mention and was finalist for the Eric Hoffer Award. Her book of literary criticism, Mundos alternos y artisticos en Vargas Llosa explores the visual and interartistic elements in the Peruvian Nobel's narrative. A recipient of the Nazim Hikmet Poetry Awards, she was a six-time nominee for the Pushcart Prize and Best of the Net. Her work appears in Cimarron Review, Te Bitter Oleander, Blue Fifth Review, Cider Press Review, Drunken Boat, Gargoyle, Nimrod, Poet Lore, World Literature Today and Verse Daily. She has a passion for art and teaches Spanish at Western Michigan University.

Beth Cato hails from Hanford, California, but currently writes and bakes cookies in a lair west of Phoenix, Arizona. She shares the household with  a hockey-loving husband, a numbers-obsessed son, and a cat the size of a canned ham. She's the author of THE CLOCKWORK DAGGER (a 2015 Locus Award finalist for First Novel) and THE CLOCKWORK CROWN (an RT Reviewers' Choice Finalist) from Harper Voyager. Her novella "Wings of Sorrow and Bone" was a 2016 Nebula nominee. BREATH OF EARTH begins a new steampunk series set in an alternate history 1906 San Francisco. Fall 2017 Film Festival @ PVCC

The Film Festival at PVCC is a series of films screened at the Center For Performing Arts over course of the fall semester. This year, the festival theme is Director's Choice, highlighting films from international directors across a variety of genres.
